German style board games started to evolve in the 1980's and took off in a large way. These are essentially tabletop games that have relatively simple rules so that almost anyone can play them. These are not games that require a large level of training or practice and can be played once you have become familiar with the rules. Typically German style games fall between abstract games like chess and extremely strategic ones like war games. The level of difficulty is slightly more than typical party games where the amount of planning is extremely low.

German style games can generally be played by a large number of players so that everyone can join in the fun. They are based on a theme that could range for wealth creation, farming, travelling to town planning too. Since the games are meant for everyone, there are two very common characteristics of the game. For one, these games do not eliminate a player completely from the game at any time. The other thing is that the rules of these games are such that they tend to favor the player who is losing.

The board games that are German style tend to have irregular boards and not like the ones that you are likely to find in board games like chess, scrabble and snakes and ladders. The easy game does however, allow for depth of play and it is extremely easy for the players to get too involved in the process to the extent that arguments can erupt.
